The end of the year (school year) brings us a lot of excitement, awards ceremonies, and ultimately, Graduations. Here in Bakersfield, this can consume a family like ours (when more than one child is in High School). I’m proud of our children and their accomplishments, and I love to see them recognized for what they do. But oooh, is it tiring. There is banquet after banquet – one for each activity our children are in. There’s the Sports Banquet, the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) banquet, the Future Farmers of America (FFA) banquet, and on top of that, winding up the Track season with post seasonal competitions such as Districts, Sectionals, and hopefully, State meets.
At these banquets, I also appreciate that those working with our children recognize the contributions of others such as parents. One would expect they honor their bosses in the Administration and School Board, but there is one unsung category of heroes who are truly in thankless positions: The Kitchen Staff. They have catered and served hundreds of parents and students over these busy weeks with great food and sweet smiles. When the kudos go out, they get overlooked, overworked and underpaid. As teachers get salary increases each year, the school board often forgets these folks and all their hard work. They are short-staffed, yet pull off miracles of food preparation, following countless rules and regulations from sanitation requirements to dietary needs. I want to thank the ladies of the Kitchen Staff at Bakersfield High School for all they do, and for the love they do it with! They serve a full day’s work, and then return a few hours later to do it all again in the evening – and so few seem to recognize they’re doing it. Yes, they get paid. Yes, it’s all for the kids. But if parents, teachers, administration, and board-members – even custodial staff – can get recognized, let’s not forget those who are so kind, hard-working, and fun folks as these ladies of our school kitchen!
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, ladies!
Holler for Jesus,
Greg Yount
