The Great Commission Resurgence

It seems that everyone is commenting on this Great Commission Resurgence (GCR)that our SBC has put together under Johnny Hunt’s leadership. I urge you to read its axioms (via Danny Akin) for yourself before deciding what to think on it.

However, since I have read it and some blogs pro and con (and this is MY blog), I’ll give you some of my thoughts for what they’re worth.

First of all, one comment about how to destroy the GCR is to focus on axiom #9 – restructure the GBC – is right. What has that to do with the GCR?

I’m not sure just what the opposition is all about. Isn’t the Great Commission our supreme purpose in being here? I’m for it. Isn’t our approach to that Great Commission to life a Christ-centered life? Our genuineness is evident. Perhaps this is why it is part of the GCR axioms: too many don’t live Christ-centered lives.

Truth is under attack when it is not a convenient truth. Our humanity reveals that everyone has a tendency to live that way. We are good only when it benefits us. We are bad when that benefits us, too. Check out the driving of a Christian who is late, or the white lies told to telemarketers about the “man of the house” being away.

My point is this – the GCR will blossom when Christians walk the talk, and talk the walk. Our devotion to Christ needs to be stronger than our devotion to numbers, methods/programs, or even our denomination. Christ came before Southern Baptists – and He will come after them, too. Denominations don’t exist in heaven. We must focus on eternity and not on anything else. Let the GCR begin in our hearts, fill our lives, and then we will see it in our numbers. It all sounds like so much salesmanship as it is now. This is not our calling. Christ is. All for Jesus!

Holler for Jesus,

Greg Yount

I say 'Amen' to this! So much time is wasted on fighting over denominational differences. While they DO matter in terms of Who we believe Jesus is, once we've trusted Christ, our primary focus should be to share the Gospel with others and lead them to Christ - not to prove our superior view on peripheral issue. The more people who are out doing evangelism, the better!
